Joyce Rovetta presents the story of Louviers, Colorado

Joyce Rovetta presents the story of Louviers, Colorado and the growth of a giant business in an out-of-the-way place. Was it the right place, at the right time?

E. I. Du Pont de Nemours & Company began on the east coast, extending their French black powder explosive to the West to “shake up the minerals in the mountains”.

A quiet village was built as a company town with only one way in and out to discourage random visitors. The influence of the Du Pont sponsors resulted in a small French style village.

How dangerous was the dynamite manufacturing process? How successful was this plant? What was it like to live in a company town? Residents share their stories.

About our Presenter: Joyce Rovetta

As a history teacher and then a librarian, Joyce Rovetta enjoyed the time she spent in the Louviers Community House library. Her first job was to develop a short history of the DuPonts and their dynamite factory to answer the many questions being asked. In the process, she met people whose families had been in on the beginning of this enterprise from building the first houses in 1906.

Joyce wrote a Landmark application for the Douglas County Commissioners and participated in the Centennial of the DuPont plant’s founding. Recently, she has been presenting history classes with Power Point/Zoom at Wind Crest in Highlands Ranch.
